'Masjid‘ is derived from the word to prostrate and is used in the sense of ’prostrated place'. 

In the Qur'an and hadiths, the places of worship of Muslims are referred to as ‘masjid’. Later, the larger mosques in which Friday prayers were performed and sermons were read were called ‘al-masjid al–mosque’ in the sense of bringing the community together.
